How did you get your Government Job?

$

Hello Everyone,

I may be making too much of a fuss about trying to get a government position but I'm convinced it is best for me in my field (Science).

Of course at the end of the day, there is nothing to it but to apply and hope for a response, but I know there are other reasons people end up getting stable positions with the government.

So how did you/close friend/family get your/their position with the federal/provincial/any municipality government?

Was it through volunteering and then landing a job over time? Did you have a reference to put your application through? Do you have a family member on the inside that helped you? Was it through a co-op or internship turned full-time? Did you do a contract for a short-term with an agency and end up permanent? Or was it just the good old online application without any external help whatsoever? Anything I'm missing?

Are Government jobs better than Private Secor jobs? Pros and Cons for each?

As stated above.
I've noticed several threads recently from people seeking employment in Government jobs. In those threads there are frequent comments suggesting government jobs are better than private sector jobs. Is this true? What am I missing here? Are government jobs really better than Private Sector? What are the benefits of working in government as opposed to working for a non government employer or being self employed for that matter?

Someone please explain, please?

MBA + P.Eng. worth it?

$

Hey all,

I'm a P.Eng. with 4+ years in my field, currently making decent money at a consulting firm. My career is advancing fairly well. I'm transitioning into a Project Manager role and I can see myself in middle management in a few years. However looking ahead, I have aspirations to be in an upper management position at a larger company. I also struggle to see how I can spend the next 30+ years in the engineering industry.

So right now I'm considering an MBA so I can be more mobile between industries. I'm thinking either Rotman or Schulich, but going Stateside is not out of the question.

Just want to get opinions of those who have taken this path, and whether or not it's worth it. With a two years of lost income and high tuition costs, this will be an investment well over $200k or more. I'm really struggling to peg down the value of the MBA for someone in my position, given the already decent salaries that engineers earn. Do engineers generally have an easier time moving sectors to begin with? Should I pursue a different designation (M.Eng, PMP, etc.?).

Thanks for any input you may have.

Toronto ranked best economy for young people in new study

Hey, consider yourselves lucky to be in Toronto! It's worse out there in other cities.

Quote:

Toronto offers the best economic environment for young people among 35 global cities, according to a study published Monday.
The survey, commissioned by the New York-based Citi Foundation, delved into employment and growth statistics and considered the strength of government programs, educational institutions and entrepreneurial opportunities for people aged 18 to 25.

Despite youth unemployment that’s almost double the rate of the general population and a relatively low sense of optimism, Toronto placed first, beating out formidable global hubs such as New York, London, Hong Kong and Singapore.
It seems Drake was right all along. It really is “hot up in The 6.”

“It’s fair to say that Toronto punched above its weight,” said Leo Abruzzese, global director of public policy at The Economist Intelligence Unit, which was commissioned to conduct the study.

“Toronto finished higher than we would have expected based on things like how much money people make in that city.”
Each city included in the study, called Accelerating Pathways, was given a score out of 100. Rankings were based on 31 indicators, such as affordability of education, ease of opening businesses and gender gaps in wage and labour force participation. Roughly 150 young people from each city were also chosen to complete telephone and online surveys about their perceived job prospects and sense of optimism about economic growth.

The results were weighted and placed on the 100-point scale. Toronto placed first with a score of 77, placing second in government support and employment, and first in “human and social capital.”

Brandee McHale, president of the Citi Foundation, said the study was done as a response to a perceived influx of young people to cities that are growing, such as Toronto.

Important questions for the researchers were: “What can we uncover about how to ensure that cities are meeting the needs of this critical population, and how can we capture new information that helps cities to learn from one another?” McHale said.
“Ultimately, the cities that get it right for young people are going to be places that people want to live, businesses want to locate, and really will be seen as the cities of tomorrow that others aspire to be.”

The study included several cities from various regions, including Europe, Latin America, Asia, Africa and the Middle East. There is also a mix of cities in developed countries and “emerging markets.”

Abruzzese said the study found that almost half of the 5,000 survey respondents had moved to their city in the past two years, looking for work opportunities or a better standard of living. Cities such as Chicago, London and Toronto had better scores for civic engagement, while people in places like Delhi and Casablanca were more likely to start their own businesses.

He was also struck to discover that 75 per cent of respondents said they were optimistic about the economic future of their respective cities.
Speaking of Toronto, Abruzzese praised city programs like the municipal Partnership to Advance Youth Employment (PAYE), which was created in 2009 to help young people land jobs. He added that Toronto has a smaller wage gap between men and women than many other cities.

That’s great and all, but Abruzzese wouldn’t encourage a parade down Yonge St.

“Although Toronto came first, it’s not really a standout,” Abruzzese said, pointing out that all the cities in the top 10 scored higher than 70 points, while the difference between first and fifth was just 3.6 points. Toronto could get a higher score with a lower youth employment rate and a better performance in the educational institutions category.

There’s also the matter of attitude: Toronto was fifth-last (30th out of 35 cities) in its level of optimism about economic prospects.
“Toronto has come first, so all due credit for that, but there’s still quite a bit of room for improvement,” said Abruzzese.
Fair enough

Hello everyone !

I just moved to BC from France, and am now looking for a job.

I would like to apply online to APEGBC Membership and start the process. I have a question about this, maybe you can help me : should I apply for EIT status, or apply directly for P. Eng. membership ?
My background :
Education : French "Diplôme d'Ingénieur", equivalent to a Master's Degree in Engineering, under a program that is accredited by APEG.
Work experience : 6 years as an Engineer in France. No work experience in Canada
In my case, would the EIT status be asset on the job market ?
Or if I apply to P. Eng. directly, I understand I will have a Provisional Member status (during my one year experience in Canada) ; is this status an asset vis-à-vis a potential employer ? Or is it worthless until I meet all requirements ?

Thank you for your help,

Roger

Engineering (cpet)

I'm back again because I just can't seem to be happy with accounting. In 2nd year university after getting a college diploma. The job market seems filled with low paying positions, universities want you to go to toronto, and the people are all just really fake and act a certain way that I don't like. I really don't want to be in school for another 3 years, then spend 2 years getting a designation for something that will likely make me only 50k a year. It's so brutal because even guys I know in toronto who work at a big 4 are only at 40k after like 3 or 4 years. And I will absolutely not go to toronto.

I did a career assessment and got power plant operator. The closest thing to that that interests me is a process operator. The cpet program is 3 years with a year of co op. Everyone I know has done the CPET course at Lambton and loves their job. They all claim to clear 60k a year when starting out. When I hear what they do and how their work schedule is I really feel like it's my ideal job. Can anyone comment on the program and job market in sarnia?

Company forcing to buy into long term disability insurance

Hey all,

My bf just started a new job. Since we are common law and he is covered under my insurance, I asked him to decline insurance coverage at his workplace. He was told today that he cannot decline the long term disability portion ($40/month) of it and has to sign up for it even if he doesnt want the health and dental portion ($10/month) of it. Is that legal?

We dont want to waste $600/year to cover something that is already covered under my employer at no extra cost to me. But his employer insists that its necessary.

Please help.

P.S. : We are in Ontario (Toronto), if that matters.

I heard Clothing Advisors at Harry Rosen are 100% commission based, wondering if it's worth trying to bargain at all for discounts.

How is the job prospect for Civil Engineers at Vancouver?

$

Hey guys,

First time poster on this forum, I’ve got a question that I’ve been to ask for a while now, how is the job prospect for Civil Engineers at the moment in Vancouver? Specifically for Structural Engineers, how are the local design firms/consultancies doing currently?

Really at a crossroad in my life at the moment and need to decide whether to move over there or not. The cost of moving and accommodation won’t be an issue so the decision is based purely on the job prospect. Been there earlier this year and really love the city!

I just finished my Civil Engineering degree and got an offer from a small/medium sized property development and construction company, mainly focusing on residential projects. Thought this could be a great opportunity to move over to the city.

However there’s a chance that I may switch over to structural design later on in life, in case I find construction management to be unsuitable for me, since construction can be a really stressful industry. So I’m hoping to leave an avenue open in case I wish to switch career later.

So how is the structural engineering market doing at the moment, and what’s the future prospect of this sector? Base on BC’s labour market outlook publication, it seems Civil Engineers is among the list for top opportunity occupations:

https://www.workbc.ca/WorkBC/media/W...014-2024_C.pdf

However the information given is too general since it talks about Civil Enginners as a whole rather than the specific sub-disciplines: structural/transport/water/geotech/construction. I’m also only interested in the area within the Greater Vancouver Region. Also not sure if the figure given is applicable to the graduate level or those with little experience on hand.

Therefore I wish to inquire, how is the job prospect for structural engineers within the Greater Vancouver Region? And also how easy would it be to switch from construction management to structural design work?

Assume I’ve got a few years of experience at a local property development/construction company (but none for design), how hard would it be to find a job at a structural design/consultancy company in Vancouver? Sincerely appreciate any kind of advices, thank you!

Best Regards,
Johnson
