Whats the process of moving to a better job?

$

Say hypothetically Person A is in an 80k position but looking for greener pastures (maybe around 90 - 100k). Do they inform my employer they are looking for a better job?

Do you ask the interviewer of the new company to fully disclose all the salary + benefits + daily work / tasks information?

Please advise

Is anyone familiar with the Initial Appointees Relocation Program ?

It looks like I should be receiving a letter of offer shortly and I am wondering about a few things, for instance it will cost me more to ship a mattress then it's worth to buy one? Has anyone been able to purchase new things with the funds or is strictly moving / travel expenses?

Is there a way to use it on Rent for the first x months?

Any let's say I incur a moving expense 2 months after I start as long as I have not made my full claim does that qualify?

Salary at Interview

Are there any other online sources of salaries than Glassdoor?

I was looking up my salary at a competitor for an upcoming interview and the same role is nearly 40% higher than where I'm at now so I'm not entirely certain how accurate that rating is (at least for that role).

How could respond as to my salary expectations if asked? This would be for a role as a product manager in one of the big five banks

Best GTA College for Video Game design?

Hello!
I recently graduated from Ryerson with a New Media degree and I regret it greatly...
I am looking to potentially go back to school for Video Game Design (not programming or development). I am more interested in the creative concept route as oppose to coding a game. I was wondering which colleges have the best video design program. The 3 I am looking at right now is Sheridan, Seneca and George Brown. I know Sheridan has an amazzzing animation program, but how does the gaming program compare? And how does Seneca, George Brown or any other colleges in GTA compare?I am turning 25 in the summer and I am really hesistant to do Sheridan's 4 years program.. But if it is truly the best then I would consider it. Does anyone have any advice for me? Where I should go?

Please don't recommend me doing a more generalized program like computer science or programming because I have very little interest in the coding aspect.

Thanks!

Grades ...

Hey guys, I'm a second year university student and my grades aren't so hot I'm doing alright like C+ average. I'm just wonder how important are grades to employers as I see that all they care about is proof of education. So it's either you have the degree or you don't. For example I think that they're lawyers out there who graduated from law school with 60s who are practicing law and also they're are lawyers who got 90s and are practicing law. Also they I'm thinking that work experience is more important.

CareerEdge salary for RBC

Anyone got a RBC internship through CareerEdge? I was wondering what's the salary range? On CareerEdge it says the salary is a "non-negotiable $2275/mo" but that's already untrue as it's not CE that decides the salary, but rather the employer. I got an offer from another big company at $16/hr which translates to about $2560/mo, but I'm still waiting on an offer from RBC. Just wondering what the rate for RBC is like, as the position is similar for these two companies.

Need urgent help please! Employer wants me to quit and reapply!

Hi everyone,

Recently, I told my manager that I need to go on vacation for 4.5 weeks from mid-December to mid-January (that period of time is the slowest time of the year for our company). So they had no problems approving my request, and both me and my manager dated and signed the request specifying the time period and number of days I'll be away. I made a photocopy of the request for myself after we both signed it. The flights have been booked.

The next day, my manager told me that work is picking up, a deadline schedule is being made and that I'm taking too many days off. He told me that because of this, they would be losing money during the time I'm away. He also said that because I'm taking too many days off, they would need me to quit and reapply once I'm back because of legal issues regarding the number of vacation days (to me, this last part sounds sketchy but I'm not an expert in this matter).

To change or cancel flight dates, I would have to pay hundreds of dollars in cancellation fees/flight date change fees, on top of the higher flight prices for a change in dates (flight prices are almost double what I paid for if I go later and come back earlier because of the busy holiday season).

I don't think they have any rights to do that and I feel like I'm being harassed into quitting and reapplying (especially after they've already signed and approved my request and the flights being booked). I would really appreciate any advice on how to handle this situation.

Taking the plunge as independent consultant

Hello,

Tried searching the forum and didnt find anything on the first few pages...

I have been a Full Time employee at a financial institute for 10+ years, and I am contemplating to enter the IT consulting business as an independent.

Checked various websites and was offered bits and pieces of information (having to register, get a good accountant, HST, etc).

Would appreciate if anybody can recommend a good book or article that can sum up everything so I can learn everything I need to learn from one source.

Thanks!

Juggling multiple job offers?

Hi RFD, looking for some tips here.

I've recently graduated (undergrad) and have been applying for entry-level roles in my field (finance).

After almost a month of not hearing anything I am now in the interview process with 4 companies. 2 of the interviews went well and I'm all but certain to make final rounds, 2 of the interviews are early next week.

Even being the pessimist I generally am, it appears that I may receive more than one offer. The problem is that each company has a different timeline, and none of the 4 positions are exactly the same (but all entry-level finance roles).

Can you give me some general advice here? what kind of things can I tell employers if they extend me an offer with a short acceptance deadline when I know I may get better offers shortly thereafter? I always try to be as truthful and honest as possible but I'm sure telling a potential employer "I'm in final round interviews with 3 other companies and waiting to hear from them first" is not a good idea..

How does the salary negotiation process work? Every time I've been asked what my salary expectations are I told them something general like "don't know yet" "don't have any figure in mind", and they haven't mentioned any salary ranges either.

Thanks for any tips. This would be my first permanent FT job so naturally I don't have much experience here.

P.S. the roles are Financial Analyst, Junior Financial Analyst, and Treasury Analyst. If anyone works in this role now or has recently could PM me with salary-related tips, that would be great :)

Can an employer make you stay in the building during an unpaid lunch?

I am in a dispute at the workplace over a half hour unpaid lunch.

I am told I need to be in the building in case backup is needed, but I work 9 hour shifts and get a 30 minute unpaid lunch.

What I do on this is up to me, correct? (Go home nearby for my dog, go out for lunch etc)

What was your easiest job?
When I was about 22... I worked @ Grand and Toy as a stock boy. My job was to process the delivery palettes every morning. Take off all he shrink wrap and stock all the products onto the shelves. Then put whatever was left over into the stock room.

I had a set schedule Tuesday-Friday 7am-3pm. Pretty rare for retail. But I liked having a 3 day weekend every week... and only worked during the days thus having the night off. It was just a pain waking up @ 5:30am to get to work.

Long Commute for Awesome Job, Should I take the Job?

I live in Pickering and currently commute to downtown Toronto each day on the train. My door to door commute is 1hr 15mins including walking time.

I have an awesome job offer for a job in Oakville. However the commute could be more than I am willing to do. I would need to catch the train from Pickering GO station to Clarkson Go station and then drive 15min to the office. Total commute time would be 1hr 35min to 1hr 40min.

The commute sucks but the this is an awesome job. I have been looking at Senrior Finanical Analyst roles in the $80K-$85K range and this is a Finance Manager job @$90K. I was not expecting that I would be able to get a finance manager job as I don't have experience managing direct reports. If I didn't take this role it would be about 3 years before I would have the experience to get a finance managers job. The second factor is the job growth prospects are amazing. I would be groomed for the financial controller position in 1-2 years time with compensation circa $120K. This effectively crushes my ten career path into two years.

Incremental Costs

Total $3,800 to $11,300 p.a

For the purpose of this thread assume I can't move to Oakville.

There was an OPG NOIT thread so I just wanted to create a thread on people who interviewed with OPG for New Grad EIT program this year or have interviewed in past years. I know the interviews were in 2nd week of November this year for positions starting in May.

What kind of experience did you have?
Which group/division did you interview for?
What kind of questions were you asked; behavioral like explain your teamwork skills or technical?
Has anyone heard back since the interview for next steps?

becoming an insurance broker

Hello,

I am currently working at a field where I feel like I can have a good number of Auto Insurance, tenant insurance and travel insurance customers.
I contacted one of small local insurance retails asking about becoming an agent based on commission.
I found out that I need to take CAIB 1, 2 and 3 test.

1) How hard are those CAIB 1, 2 and 3 tests? Are those tests are similar to CPA and CFA?

2) If I would like to do on top of my current work, what would be the best way? For example, pass all of three exams first and then find a insurance company to work as a staff getting a salary based on commission?

Thank you for your advise.

Not sure if this is the right thread to post it but here goes...

M/24/Toronto

Education:

2013 - Graduated with BA in Economics with an Environmental Economics Minor. ~3.1 GPA

Apr 2015 - Graduated with a postgrad diploma in the environmental sustainability field. 3.9 GPA

Experience:

3 years in a leadership/executive student role in my first school's environmental advisory team (2010-2013)

About 1 year combined in sales/performing administrative tasks (Apr-Sep 2011, and as well as during my intern below)

7 months working as an intern in the public sector in the environmental department, as a requirement to graduate for my postgrad diploma. I mainly did environmental research, community outreach, and reorganizing the department's website for user friendliness and SEO. (Oct 2014 to May 2015) Unfortunately due to budget cuts, they didn't keep me full time (my supervisor also got laid off around the same time I left).

Working on a side project/startup? since July 2015 with a friend who's a freelance videographer...it's not generating income for me, but I've helped my friend create a basic website promoting his content using SEO, worked with pricing strategies, created social media feeds, and created sales charts/reports focusing on past performances and current trends, and where he should focus on in promoting his stock footage. His sales have increased by over 150% since the website launch, and he's been very grateful of my efforts. Currently this person is my primary reference for anything work related.

Situation:

Aside from my side project, I've been unemployed since May and have sent about 200 applications, with 13 interviews, but no offers. I've also attended 5 networking events and had 3 coffee meets, with all 3 telling me that I have an excellent resume related to the environmental field and they would hire me if they had the authority to, but suggested I go for further studies if needed. I've been led on a tangent in my most recent interview, after my initial interviewer told me they chose another candidate, but another department was impressed with my resume and samples and wanted to hire me. They interviewed me last Monday, and told me to expect an offer this Wednesday. Wednesday came and I got an email...saying they're gonna take a different approach into finding the ideal candidate. I spent all of Wednesday beyond depressed and used Friday to forget everything about job hunting and enjoy the outdoors.

My passion lies toward the environmental sustainability/urban planning field...which was something I discovered after joining that environmental advisory team. I really want to be part of an organization that can contribute to either a program, project, or strategy that focuses on environmental sustainability, or an organization that focuses on community building practices in designing communities that create vibrant pedestrian hubs. I have experience and knowledge in the first part, but my urban planning experience is confined towards my 3 years in the environmental student advisory team, as well as some urban planning courses I took in university (after begging to my university that I wanted to take these courses as a secondary field of interest).

I have a few places where I wanna target for grad school, all with programs related to either the environmental studies or planning fields. However I'm hesitant on applying as I don't know whether it would be a good investment in getting into the field I want to get into. I follow a lot of environmental professionals and planners via social media, and I noticed many of them have some sort of masters degree.

I guess the question becomes...in the field that I wanna pursue, is a masters degree something that's pretty much needed nowadays, and/or given my situation, would going back to school be the best idea for me?

Thanks for reading through the wall of text; it means a lot to me! I'm open to PMs if you wanna PM me, or if you wanna see my resume I'll be more than happy to send it.

CPA PERT tool - "Position Duties" description?

$

For you guys that either have CPA students or are in the CPA PER program, when the student is filling out the "technical competencies" section of an experience report, how are they handling the "position duties" description? Is this supposed to exactly match the CPA PER Guide's definition listed in Appendix 1? Or is the description specifically tailored to the actual position you have at the firm? CPA's faq materials don't give much guidance on this, so I'm at a loss as to what to tell the students. I'll call the Institute on Monday to confirm (they of course don't work weekends) but figured maybe one of the CPA's here knew how this is supposed to work. Thanks -Hansol

Anyone started their career as a warehouse person?

$

Hi everyone, I am in my late twenties currently working in a warehouse as an order picker that supports the Oil and Gas industry. This is my 4th year in this company. I am not sure what my options are so I am here to ask for guidance. This is my first real job. As I spent the earlier part of my life hanging out with the wrong crowd, abusing alcohol and playing video games. But since I have been sobered for 6+ years after deciding to turn my life around. It was a real wake up call when I got on facebook and saw my old high school classmates getting married, buying houses, and earning $70k+, while I was (still am) living in my mom's basement. I feel like such a loser, a total of waste of oxygen, for messing up so badly. If I don't have to hanging around to take care of my mom in the future, I would have off-ed myself instead of sorting this mess - I call life - out. Well, it is what it is, and I am the one to blame.

As you know, the Oil and Gas sector is not doing well, my company has been laying off people every quarter for the past year and a half to decrease cost. Since I am still here, I would like to think my boss thinks highly of me, enough to keep around. But on the other, I might just be another piece of meat to her. In the past, rumor has it that she tipped her favorites off on openings so they can chat with the hiring managers first. Several times, my co-workers were already "hired" by the time the job opening was announced. I am not sure if there is a future to this company if advancement was based on kissing ass instead of actual capabilities, skills or intelligence. Or am I just too naive to think that those qualities alone will be enough?

While I still have my pay cheques coming in for the next month or so (bean counters are looking at laying people off again), what can I do to increase my earning power? Should I put edX courses (I have been taking Excel courses) on my resume? If I decide to quit, I think my boss might retaliate by refusing to be a reference for me. Should I spent a day, once a week, doing some volunteer work, say at the Food Bank / library (as they are like a warehouse-type operation) to build some connections? Since I had been warehousing for 4 years, I would like to continuing in this industry to build upon my experience, is there some courses (paying or free) I can do to make myself more desirable?
