“The companies say they tried — and failed — to find Canadians to work at the mines, so the federal government is allowing them to bring in the ‘temporary’ Chinese miners as a result,” writes Michael Smyth.
But he says most of the ads clearly stated the companies were looking for workers who speak Mandarin, a requisite that would clearly leave the majority of Canadian applicants out.
Canadians are finding that when they go to apply to jobs in their own country, the foreign owners are imposing arbitrary and unnecessary requirements such as Mandarin proficiency, in addition to the usual trades skills and certifications required.
When unable to find such workers, firms are resorting to complaining to the government of labour shortages, and demanding the importation of cheap foreign guest workers.
Many of us know this practice to be quite rampant in the IT industry, particularly in the USA, but it seems that the disease has now infected BC's mining industry.
Comments? Should Canada nip this sort of misbehaviour in the bud while legions of Canadian tradespeople displaced by the now collapsing real estate industry beg for jobs?
