help advice on career change to IT field

I'm 24 years old and I want to career change from auto mechanics to information technology sector. I went to college for a 2 year program in auto motive. I had bad luck finding a sponsor for apprenticeship. I had done mechanic in private shop earning practically nothing and just for a experience and later moved on to auto-bodies which I didn't enjoy doing and also earning nothing. Then later got into a dealership that'll promise me to give me apprenticeship after 2 years of detailing cars and 3 years in apprenticeships so a total of 5 years working for them and on top of that I have to sign a contract working for them additional 5 years after being a certified licensed mechanic.

After being about 3 months as entry position car wash attendant close to min. wage. I've had enough of this. I hate it. I hate it with a passion. I do not want to pursue this anymore. My co-worker suggested me to leave this field (or he's going to get my fired joking of course) and it doesn't get better and that coming from an auto mechanic which I wanted to be. I had a sudden realization that I'm wasting my life away and I am very unhappy with what I am doing. What I'm really interested doing is doing something computer related and I feel like I can accomplish so much more. Among my friends, they come to me with computer problems and I guess I am pretty good at it without formal education. So this is something I want to do.

My high school marks are in the low 80s and I have considered going into university with co-op which is usually a 5 year program or I should stick with a 2 or 3 years with co-op college diploma. I have no idea where to start. what school to take or anything at all.

To my own knowledge I feel like 2 or 3 year college with co-op is the way to go but i am worried about finding that first job after graduation and if it is a must I'll take the university or upgrade it to a degree. I don't know if theyre even compatible. Otherwise, I feel like I'm done with life. I'm broke.

I don't know anyone else who works in this field so networking isn't possible. I had tried going in sheridan college for questions but coordinators are not in until next week. All they could tell me is that university do theory work and college do practical and that doesn't mean anything to me. I don't even know what that means.
I came across this program which is on wait list until friday (Jan 11, 2013). If anyone drops out. I would get it if I enrolled because the wait list is prioritized by academics. school starts monday. I want to change my life as soon as possible. I don't know what to do... I don't want to rush it and take the wrong program but i don't want to wait another year either.
