I am planning on trying a new career in which I will have to move away...thing is I have a pretty good job now which I would not want to lose..just in case this new adventure does not work out for me.

Question is can I take a Personal Emergency Leave, and then without going back to work slip right into a Family Medical Leave? Basically I am trying to take as much of a leave as possible...so I can experience the new career path the most I can before making the final decision to stay or go back to what I had.
* SECONDARY QUESTION: If my employer likes me and doesn't want me to leave (which is my case) are they legally allowed to keep me as an employee but grant me an extended leave of absence? This would all be much easier if this was possible. The personal leave of 10 days is just not enough time.
