What to do about short stint jobs?

Hi there,

Great forum guys.

I've got questions. What do I do about short jobs and contracts that really are the new employment trend of the post-modern era? I get employers screening me out left, right and centre because my resumé looks like I cannot hold down a job yet that is the reality of the modern, cost-centred workplace. They hire you when they need you and spit you out when they're done with you.

But employers have not adapted to this new reality. They still think a resumé should read with a solid job history and no gaps. But they, at least in retail, should know that they cut hours when sales targets are not met and when budgets run out. What to do?

I have put a Disclaimer of sorts (statement) on my resumé and will for every application stating that due to current economic conditions, my job history had been largely contracts and short term jobs.

Any other recommendations here?

And what about references? Why do employers want them yet few employers if any now offer them for fear of being sued? What does one do when they do not really have any references because they are not provided? I wonder too why I work so hard if an employer will only give the dates of your employment and that is it. Like why bend over backwards for minimum wage if you will get no thanks? Anyone else with me? It's true, they expect top shelf performance day after day and yet will not even do you the favour of simply saying "yes, she was a really excellent employee who was one of my best front end people".
