I'm a new immigrant working at a grocery store operated by a supermarket of Loblaw in Alberta. My job involves lifting and moving large quantities of fruits and vegetables every day. Some of the boxes weigh up to 50 pounds.
Out of concern for my safety, I asked my supervisor if I could get PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) — especially protective footwear. However, my manager told me that PPE is not provided for my position, even though he often reminds me not to drop boxes on my feet.
This feels contradictory and unsafe. I can't help but feel like I'm being singled out or treated unfairly because I'm new here and still learning how things work. As a newcomer, I don't fully know what rights I have in the workplace, but something about this situation doesn't feel right.
Can anyone tell me if this is legal under Alberta labour or occupational health and safety laws? Should PPE be provided for physically demanding work like this?
Thanks in advance for any advice or shared experiences.
