Hey Everyone,
Sorry for yet another accounting thread (and an extremely long message). It's a self-fulfilling prophecy. People see lots of them on here so they come here to create new ones, lol.
I'm moving from Quebec to Ontario very soon and was planning on doing the CMA program. However, CMA Ontario has been giving me issues with my file and I've had to do appeals and such (pre-req/course code confusion issues, nothing grade-wise). Even though I did the "CMA path" during my B.Comm, I'm open to doing the CGA program if CMA Ontario insists on me taking extra courses.
My heart isn't set on any one-type of Accounting career, so I'd like to explore my designation options. Time and money is a bit of a factor since I'll be living on my own with expenses to pay, etc. But it's not a deal-breaker unless one would take significantly longer than the other.
Given that CGA Ontario charges around $412 with tax to do a transcript evaluation/credit transfer assessment, I'd like to get an idea of where I might stand from people who are in (or did) the program first so I can decide whether it'll be worth it to pay up and submit my transcripts.
I did a B.Comm with a major in Accounting (finished in December)
As for Accounting courses that would be relevant to CGA, I've done:
Intro to Financial Acco
Intermediate Financial Acco 1 (Assets) & 2 (Liabs & Equities)
Advanced Financial Acco (Consolidations)
Intro to Management Acco
Intermediate Management Acco
Advanced Management Acco
Taxation in Canada 1
Audit 1
Accounting Information Systems
Accounting Theory
I also did a Non-profit/Gov't Accounting course & a Case-study Management Accounting course but I don't see any mention of them on CGA Ontario's website so I don't think they matter.
Non-accounting Business courses:
Management Information Systems
Business Law
Business Communication
Corp Finance
Business Stats
Micro & Macro Econ
and all the other usual common courses in every B.Comm
Basically everything from the "Foundation Studies" table except for maybe "BC1 Accounting Business Case" although I don't know if that counts as some other course.
Everything from the "Advanced Studies" table except for "BC2 Public Practice Audit Case" unless that's called something else
Nothing from the "Career Electives" table unless "Information Systems Strategy" is AIS, but I doubt it.
And obviously nothing from the "Professional Level" table since those are offered just from the CGA order.
CGA Quebec is different from CGA Ontario. For CGA-Qc you need to do the CGA program through a university. They require Taxation in Canada 2, A "Seminar in taxation" course, and Advanced Auditing before being admitted into the program. From looking at CGA Ontario's program table, it appears as though tax 2 and adv. auditing are electives depending on which path one takes, and not pre-requisites for admission.
If any CGA Candidate or designated member could read over my post and let me know where they think I would stand and how long it would take to complete the courses (work experience is an entirely different beast, I'm aware) it would be greatly appreciated :)
Just for reference, this is the CGA program table I'm referring to: https://www.cga-ontario.org/Program_At_A_Glance.aspx
Thanks!
