Accountant: quitting during tax season(February)

Hello members,

I'm working at a small public practice now, but I hate my boss and his wife who have been treating me less than dirt for the past 3 years. I could go for pages about sub-humane treatment I've been receiving from this firm, but this one's the best. One time, he said "no cell phone in this office" and made me repeat after him. My boss and his wifey also constantly discouraged me pointing out my ethnicity and told me my chance of success is slim to none. Yes, they said that. The humiliation was hard to bear, but I thought I would be losing if I quit. To make myself a little bit more trustworthy, this is a small firm with about 5-6 staffs. During my 3 years her, about 10 people left all in bad terms with the boss. I couldn't leave becuase I knew that it's difficult finding another job especially in my area(rural) where there are only a few accounting firms. Quitting was not an option because I just became a father. I don't wanna be a dad who stays home collecting EI. So I persisted 3 years in this firm and recently got an interview with the government. I really want this government job so I can make decent money and always have time after work to spend with my son and wife. The competition is going to be tough but if I do get hired, am I a jerk for leaving this firm in February? I honestly couldn't care less if my current boss is struggles during tax season because he loses one staff. My concern is he will badmouth me when he gets a reference call. What do you think RFD members?
I can't wait to get the xxxx out of here.
