I am a 4th year computer science student that just finished an 8-month co-op job in Silicon Valley at one of the top-10 Software companies (http://www.softwaretop100.org/global...0-edition-2011). I emailed my manager (which I got along with just fine) to inquire about a letter of reference or recommendation, and received the following response from him:
[Company_name] has a strict policy that we are not allowed to give recommendations or references. Something about being sued by other companies if they feel the recommendation was not true or something like that. Basically if someone contacts [Company_name] and says I gave a recommendation then I will get in trouble. Having said that, personally I have no regrets in recommending you for a job - so that is a good thing! Keep in touch!
Can I get some input? To me, it sounds like an excuse to not give me a reference, but I don't understand why he would do that, he liked me a lot. Has anyone else been denied a reference for the same reason?
