Just curious what others would do if in my shoes.
I'm currently at a job where upward mobility is somewhat limited. It's flexible in that I can pretty much plan my own daily work. I can come and go as I need. The work is challenging enough that I don't find myself to be bored and the days do go by pretty fast. The work changes constantly, so it's not routine and repetitive. I've been in this position for 7 years. I've got a good relationship with my manager and I know what is expected of me. Although my days are flexible, it isn't that flexible in that I can't really take more than one week of vacation at a time. I'm making about 95k a year with pretty good benefits.
I found out over the weekend that there is an opening at my previous employer. The opening is in the same department that I use to work in. The opening is for a position that is more senior than the position I left 7 years ago. The manager there is a casual friend of mine. We keep in touch maybe once or twice a year. He actually was my co-worker before and was promoted to manager a couple years ago. I'm not too sure what his management style is. But I can imagine that he is more hands on than my current manager. The work there will be a lot more dry and boring. There is a lot of routine involved with that job. I feel it is a job that is less demanding and has less pressure than my current job. At this job, it wouldn't be a problem for me to take 3 consecutive weeks off for vacation. This job pays a little over 100k a year and the benefits are comparable to what I have now. Upward mobility would be limited. The next position up is to be the manager.
My commute would be unaffected.
What would you do?
I'm leaning towards going for the higher paying job. Can't really complain about being paid more for something that is less demanding and less pressure right? The main reason for hesitation is having to move from a known to somewhat unknown situation.
