inb4 IT'S YOUR FAULT YOU'RE A LAZY ENGINEER. YOU SHOULD HAVE WORKED HARDER
I've been pretty pissed off with my company with regards to my P. Eng. application process. I graduated from Ryerson University (mechanical engineering - 2008) and have been working at a small consulting firm since October 2009. As of October 2013, I'd met all the criteria put forth by the PEO for P. Eng. eligibility.
The company I work for consists of 6 people including myself, the president, senior designer, senior engineer, secretary and CAD specialist. The senior engineer has always been a bit of a jerk (no one likes him) and particularly gives me a hard time because he can. The boss never gives raises so I've been making the same $47.5K since I started.
Here's the timeline of what's happened:
Early January - Sent in completed experience report and P. Eng. application package since as of October 15th, 2013, 4 years of engineering experience was completed.
January 20th, 2014 - Experience review forms issued by PEO to three references (two to P. Eng. within office; direct acting superior/boss and senior engineer, one out of office to a designer). The form is a simple questionnaire that involves checking yes/no boxes, ratings from 1 to 5 and simple single sentence answers. It takes no more than 5 minutes to complete.
late January, 2014 - Designer returns review form.
March 2014 - Senior engineer returns review form.
Between April 2014 - May 2014 - Constant reminders to direct acting superior (boss) to send in P. Eng. review form.
Mid-May 2014 - EIT (Engineer in Training) rep. states despite my experience, senior engineer only vouched I had experience from May 2011 to March 2014, thereby only having 35 months of experience and therefore, at the time, not eligible for P. Eng. licensure due to insufficient experience.
May 23rd, 2014 - Confronted senior engineer regarding incorrect experience declaration on review form. Senior engineer denies ever putting in 35 months. Requests senior engineer to email PEO to correct experience timeline. (I know this *****er was aware of what he put down. He loves memorizing numbers and events to use against people to show his superiority.)
Early June - Direct acting superior claims P. Eng. review form was returned.
June 17th, 2014 - EIT rep. says final P. Eng. review form still not received. Most likely lost in transit.
late June, 2014 - EIT rep. says final P. Eng. review form still not received. A second review form is requested and sent to the office. EIT rep. states to expedite the process, form can be filled out and emailed directly to her rather than sending it via Canada Post.
June 27, 2014 - Second P. Eng. review form is received at my office and promptly scanned and sent to my superior's email with a clear notice the form is to be filled out and emailed directly to EIT rep.
July 2nd, 2014 - EIT rep. confirms first form has not been received at PEO and secondary form has not arrived by email.
July 4th, 2014 - EIT rep. still says I have only 35 months of experience. Confront senior engineer again to send in the correction; turns out he deleted my initial email request. Request he send in correct experience timeline via email a second time.
July 6th, 2014 - Senior engineer sends corrected experience timeline. PEO confirms.
mid August, 2014 - PEO confirms final review form has been received and my application will now be processed. ETC of review process to be around early October to early December.
October 6th, 2014 - PEO sends a letter to me stating my reference(s) claim they are not familiar with my engineering work and now I have to schedule an interview with an experience requirement committee to convince them I deserve a P. Eng. Interview to consist of two panel members, video taped session (evidence that can be used against me should I end up in a disciplinary hearing for malpractice) and examples of work, calculations etc. must be brought to back up all reasoning and explanations.
October 10th, 2014 - PEO states there are several hundred applicants before my in line for interviews. Mine will likely be scheduled for early 2015. There fore, the entire P. Eng. application process has taken over a year.
If they'd put down "Applicant does not have sufficient experience for P. Eng.", I'd understand and work harder to prove myself. But the fact they'd put down they weren't familiar with my work just boils my blood. They are the only two people I accept projects from, they are the only two people that check my projects and they are the only two people that stamp the drawings and compliance letters.
Has any here on RFD who graduated from an accredited engineering program within Ontario and fulfilled the PEO's criteria for P. Eng. ever had to go for an ERC interview?
If so, what is it like?
