I'm a long time lurker but have decided to make an account now so I can dissect your minds about a problem I have.
Basically, I graduated in 2013 with a Psychology degree and decided to take the year off and figure out my plans for the future. I worked several part time jobs and in December 2013, I got a full time job as an admin assistant at a mutual funds office (basically I work with an agent who sells mutual funds and insurance policies to clients, etc). I obviously know it's not even closely related to my degree but I just needed some sort of income.
Fast forward to now, I finally realize that taking the next step in psychology isn't really for me and there is actually a 1-year post grad program at our college I am interested in taking (where I live, we have 2 major universities and a college). I will probably start in Fall 2015 but until than... what should I do? Do I notify my boss immediately or after I apply? Would you ask to be reduced to part time hours?
Keep in mind that I've only been working here since December 2013 but when I got interviewed, he knew I had plans of going back to school... probably not so soon though. The job itself is repetitive and horribly boring and sometimes reduces me to sheer boredom, but the pay is reasonable and I still have money left over after paying my rent, bills, groceries, OSAP payments, etc.
Has anyone been in this sort of position and can shed some light?
