Hello everybody, I need an advice for my career. here is my situation:
Got 2 kids (1 and 5 years old), I just graduated (may 2013) from a renown University as a Chemical Engineer. just after I graduated, I've found a job as an R&D Engineer for a start up company with only 2 employees (including the boss). this company specialize in a domain which you don't really learn at school and even if you're a Electrical/civil/geo/chemical engineer, you must get the proper training in order to become a professional engineer in this discipline.
so overall it's been a year I've worked for them, had to leave my family and friends to go work there (4h car ride). The company did get interesting contract over the year, but we still are at the beginning stage working in a small shop (basement of my boss's previous company) with what's available.
don't know if you guys did try to work for a start up company, but it's sometimes really slow and boring (no work). I do everything from shipping our machine to our customer, communicating with our supplier, purchasing and shopping, make the machine, study/ameliorate/research our product, filling the bureaucracy papers around those machine, cleaning the floor, I mean, everything. the only thing I don't do is the financial paperwork, that's done by an accountant.
Before you give me advice I want you to consider the fact that my boss is one of the king pin in this domain. I didn't leave everyone just for a 50K year job, I left because there is a long term huge potential. he sold his previous company around year 2000 for multiple millions. he's rich as ****! he signed a none compete contract for 8 years. now he's back on track in the same domain and wants to redo what he's always been good at and also because he's bored at home doing nothing. The main reason why we got those interesting contract with huge company is because he knows people from his previous company who still wants to do business with him (even after ~10 years). I'm telling you this guy is not the ordinary engineer who just try to do business, he knows what he's doing and I'm sure one day, it'll get big.
Why i'm all explaining this here is because in all the contact I have in my family nobody seems to know what to tell me.
I'm 29 years old, I make an Quebecer junior engineer salary with their taxes... so not that much yet. and I struggle paying back my student loan (like big time). this struggling is affecting my happiness, giving me stress, my couple health is in jeopardy because of that.
my wife wanted to go back to school for the last few years but waited until I finish my formation so I could pay the rent and everything. but the reality is different now, I cannot pay everything and her just going to school. not with what I do here in Quebec right now.
My options are:
A: stay here, hope for my boss to raise my salary. hope that one day I'll become his right-hand man. in the meanwhile, my wife tries to find a part time job, and we try to make it work here in Quebec.
B: I find a way of making more money here in Quebec, maybe via internet. any ideas?
C: I leave for Fort McMurray and make 8000k a month as a chemical engineer and everybody gets what they want immediately. I'll refund my dept in maybe 2-3 years. gain experience in a very wealthy domain. and then we prepare the next move.
what do you suggest me, because I'm really unhappy right now, everything bother me, I can't live like this anymore, it's unhealthy. can't do activities, can't get good supper, can't go visit our family cause of the gas money, always feel guilty when buying little treat because we can't afford it.
Jesus! sometime I feel like my decision in life are gambling...
thanks for hearing me out!
