How to be get started as a mechanic?

Hi I have a neighbour whose 40+, hes had a mechanic background from his country of origin (philippines)

He wanted to know the career path to be a mechanic in Toronto. I know he can enroll in an Automotive program such as Centennial College (Ashtonbee campus). He has two little kids and a stay at home wife due to disability.

Hes very determined to pursue this and I wanted to know if there are any mechanics out there who can advice or give insight on their career path.
