Just Got an Offer and Need an Opinion

Hi guys,

I have a dilemma that I cannot get off my chest so I was hoping to see some inputs here.

Some background: I graduated with a degree in Chem Eng and I moved to Calgary after graduation to seek a job. I have had no prior professional summer job experiences in the oil and gas industry.

The situation: I managed to get calls from 2 companies for interviews, and received offers from both. Company A is an up-and-coming oilsands company but is only offering a summer-co-op position. Pay's pretty well ($26/hr). Company B offered me a full-time position as a "Trainee Process Eng", with a 1 month training stint in the UK (with daily allowance of CAD100), and a salary on the high side of CAD 39k (albeit CAD700 less on a monthly basis compared to Company A), and to be bound by them for at least 1 year.

My choice: I decided to go with Company B as it looks to be a better offer, and after 1 year of professional experience I can apply for my PR status. But my hint of regret stems from the fact that Company A is a resource-based company and they are expected to shoot steam later this year before they start producing. My only regret is that I might miss out being part of that growth, and the benefits that might entail.

Compared to Company A, Company B is based in the UK and is setting up a new office in Calgary and I'm one of their new staffers. My friend told me my pay for Company B is on the low side for Calgary standards, but I've got no idea since I only have his advice to compare with and he works as an EIT at Husky. Maybe it's just because of my inexperience that CAD 39k seems commensurate. Heck I'm not even sure if CAD100 daily is enough to get by living in the UK! But at least I finally managed to get my foot in the door, so I got that going for me, which is nice.

I'd welcome inputs from you guys too on my situation and see if I made the right choice. I know it's too late to regret now since I've decided, but it's never too late to take corrective action.

Thank you in advance!
