Hello all.
A long time lurker here, and finally decided to start a thread about something that has been bothering me.
I work in Alberta, and in the past 3-4 years it seems my company (an EPCM) has started outsourcing big chunks (30% is the norm, and slowly that norm is becoming 40%) of each project to our branches in countries that pay a lower salary (primarily China and India). Our company tells us that the clients are demanding this (which they are, I know for a fact that the big oil companies are instructing us to send more and more of the work outside of Canada), and its the only way for them to be awarded new work. Its written in the contracts now, that (as an example), for a 1000 man-hour project, 700 will be paid at Canadian charge-out rates, and the remaining 300 at "cheaper" outsourced rates. Therefore, if my firm were to do the entire 1000 man-hour project in Canada, they would actually be paying us out of their pockets.
Its worried quite a lot of us young engineers (by young, I mean less than 10 years of experience), and I was wondering if something similar is happening in your company. If yes, what are you planning to do about it? And if not, please PM me the company you work for lol
