I work for a small company (my boss and 5 others full time) and I know I am a huge asset to the company and if I was to ever leave on short notice, my boss would have a hard time finding competent people to take on my workload. I went into his office a few weeks ago and he mentioned to me that he would like me to give him a 4 - 6 months notice before I was to quit so he can hire someone and I can train them for that period of time. He even mentioned to me that if I was to leave, he's screwed.
I feel like this is a lot to ask for...especially if I want to leave, I'd have to stay an extra 4 - 6 months training someone. Also, I'm not guarantee I will find another job right away since no employer would wait 4 - 6 months to hire me.
My question is, should I abide to this and ask for a big pay raise during my performance review (in a few weeks)? I was thinking to ask for a big raise, possibly a bonus and a severance package when I leave since I have to stay for that extra long period.
Thoughts?
