I work for an engineering company and we have a number of employees who work remotely from another city. I didn't give much thought to it before, but I am considering temporarily relocating to a different city (for approximately a year). At first I was considering leaving the company to find employment in the city I will be temporarily moving to, but since I plan to eventually return home, it will be much easier for me to remain with the company I am with.
I think this is somewhat successful where I work because we are a technology company where much of the work is easily done remotely. Also, about 15-20% of our time is spent onsite, so it doesn't really matter where the employee is coming from. Many times, the cost of flights to fly the employee back to head office is taken care of by the customer.
What are other people's experience with remote employees? I know that my career advancement will likely take a pause for as long as I remain a remote employee, but that is fine with me.
