At many major European universities, the degree titles are often unfamiliar or meaningless to people who haven't studied or worked in Europe. Sometimes it's due to translation from a foreign language, other times a foreign dialect of English makes the degree title seem normal in that dialect, but odd or confusing in Canadian English. Do some people change their degree field to the closest Canadian equivalent and then explain at the interview? On the one hand it makes sense to make your qualifications as clear as possible to your target audience, who 99% of the time have neither the background nor the time to research the exact meaning of your degree themselves. On the other hand, it feels a bit awkward putting something different on your resume from what's printed on your certificate. Then again, it's easy enough to just explain in the interview since this avoids HR throwing your application away due to being momentarily unsure about your qualifications.
What have been your experiences with this? And your thoughts on the matter?
I'm particularly interested in input from those with European degrees. Also, this isn't a case where th degree's value is in doubt. We are talking about a top 50-100 worldwide school, so roughly equivalent to a top 4 or 5 Canadian university if I recall correctly (how many Canadian universities make the top 100?)
