Scenario 1: I have a friend who landed a job in investment banking in a bulge bracket (aka top tier) bank in Europe. Makes great amounts of money - almost six figures for a new grad. But the person wants to switch into a less stressful position that does not involves her working from 7am - 2am daily (no exaggeration) and on a continual basis. In this case she values her lifestyle more than the money. As at the time of this person has switched positions.
Scenario 2: A petroleum engineer graduates from University and gets an excellent job in the field. He is a petroleum/ reservoir engineer... makes mid six figures compensation package; excluding bonuses. But the problem is, he is almost (and note the word almost) now stuck to a career by the wellsite in remote locations. Husband working in Houston and wife working in Fort McMurray for 5 years in a row, not a chance to grow up with your kids and yielding 1/2 of what you are making to CRA (note I am not against taxes) - but is the lifestyle compromise really worth it?
Scenario 3: Person A is an engineering graduate. He wants to pick a career. He is aware there are many ways to make money and build a career without self indentured servitude forever, takes a union job (engineering or maybe not) that gives great work life balance with say City of Toronto. With more work life balance (presumably), he gets to spend more time with those that matter to him a lot. He also has time for property speculation or one or two side ventures that yield additional income. He is geographically mobile and occasionally imports from China. He is satisfied with slightly less money and more time.
Which would you rather be even though not one of these scenarios. Do you take lifestyle a career offers and count the cost in terms of you being able to live with it or do you just go for it solely for the money?
