Hi guys,
I'm new to the redflagdeals careers section, but I see there is alot of interesting discussion so I am deciding to post my situation.
I am 25 years old chemical engineering graduate from UFT, I finished both my bachelor's and M.Eng and working in the manufacturing industry in Toronto. I want to move to a larger EPCM company, but I am not sure which industry I should target...and which industry is going to be more viable in the long-run for a career.
Here are my viewpoints on each industry for a chem. eng career, it should also be noted I really want to stay in the GTA for at least 1-2 years more, before settling down somewhere else:
(1) Nuclear-The Canadian Nuclear Industry seems to be on a downward spiral, ever since the Japan incident. I'm thinking if the government does not approve the Darlington new build reactors, than everything is pretty much screwed here. I can see nuclear waste management being a potential area, since there is still big issue of what to do with the used fuel.
(2) Oil and Gas-Everything is out WEST! Yes, I would have to move to Calgary or Edmonton, but at least I would have a strong career for 15-20 years, before any POTENTIAL conventional oil shortage occurs. There is pretty much no oil and gas companies in Toronto, except for like senior consulting positions...
(3) Mining-Mining seems like a good industry for Ontario. However, they seem to be really dependent on big-scale projects, so it may be good for a few years and then tank and then pick up again....alot of variability...
(4) Bio/Renewable Energy-This seems interesting, but other than alot of small scale up manufacturing companies in GTA...not really sure what's out there? Any insight?
(5) Pharmaceuticals-Mostly small scale manufacturing I imagine in the outskirts of GTA, but not really sure if this is a booming industry or not at the moment.
(6) Wastewater Treatment-seems dead....
Any other industries anyone else know of???
My other options could be to stick with where I am at and try to cross-train into other engineering options or pick up other useful skills (i.e.-programming and computer science skills), a Chem. Eng. with a computer background could be useful for companies that have broad applications. Any thoughts on this?
Or I could go into Pharmacy? How easy would it be for a Chem. Eng. to transition over?
I really hate to say it, but I have now realized that I have studied the wrong program for a person trying to find a good career in the GTA! There is still time to build on my foundation, rather than start all over again, so I want to see what I can do.
Thanks.
