If a job is in another city, province, or country, would you include a slight hint or detail in your job application cover letter why you are interested in relocating?
Bit of background. In my previous company in Canada (international firm), I spent over a year trying to secure a transfer abroad, but largely due to the natural disconnect between the head office and its international offices, I gave up and and left on good terms and moved to Germany. I found a new role with an even larger international firm where I've been for about eight months. It's been going great, but I can foresee myself moving on in short time.
Over a year ago, I met a special girl while on holidays, and after many travels together and great times, we've decided we're gonna make this work and head to the same country. Likely Australia, her home country. I'm quite mobile in my career, so it's very do-able. I'm not concerned about finding work there.
Today I noticed by coincidence that a great role has opened up in my previous company's Australian office. It's a role I would have loved to take on before. Aside from knowing the company business very well, I'm technically qualified and it's an international business position that I'm a perfect fit for now. Specifically, it involves coordinating business and projects between Europe and Australia.
So, I'm sure they're gonna scratch their heads, wonder why a guy would leave their company for a year and then crawl back after such a short time. They're bound to call my old office as a reference, too. Should I say in the cover letter at some point "For personal reasons, I have decided to relocate to Australia.", or something of the sort? Personal stuff should normally stay off the cover letter, but I feel as though I should suggest that I am serious and my relocation is not dependent upon them, it's merely coincidence. It's hard to justify moving some one from abroad if they're just kicking tires and will jump ship later. Should I leave it out, or even expand?
Additionally, any advice on applying to return to an old employer?
