Graduate with a 4 year degree:
- Have fun working minimum wage at starbucks for $10 an hour with the possibility of a promotion and a raise of $4 to assistant manager after 20 years. I should also mention, enjoy having no benefits as 40 hour work weeks are nonexistent anymore. Instead you can enjoy the 39 hour work week with no benefits.
Oh but wait, just study engineering, business etc:
- Great idea, since everyone is being told that now just wait 5-10 years for the overflow of engineers to be on the market looking for jobs. I am pretty confident the demand for engineers will turn out like the "law school scam".
"The demand for trades workers will increase by _% in the next 10 years as boomers retire"
- Yeah, wouldn't mind doing that pay is great for boomers currently employed. To bad none of them will take apprentices because none of them want paycuts either. They like having 40 hours of work and 44 hours overtime a week, having apprentices and more licensed journeymen takes their hours and pay down. All the news stories bout trades demand are a ploy to bring in Temporary foreign workers. I have friends who can't find apprenticeships even in Alberta.
BUT THE DEMAND WILL GROW BY _%!
Yeah, so will the demand for foreign workers who will work for minimum wage and also have more experience than any colleges and apprenticeships can provide for it's Canadian citizens. P.S. I have also heard people prefer foreign workers to homegrown workers as they find they work harder for less pay. Remember the BC Mining company requiring employees speak Chinese?
Healthcare will always be in demand...
Yeah, wouldn't mind doing that but first you need to acquire debt doing a 4 year degree, then med school (Better get a 4.0 GPA or you can kiss your dreams goodbye, med school is like $30,000 a year also) and then a residency. Most people couldn't afford to ever become a doctor despite the shortage. Nurses still require a 4 year degree, have one of the worst work/life balances, shift work, on call 24/7.
"Do something computer related and you will never be unemployed as the future is all technology based"
Really, I heard remote access Chinese workers are pretty good programmers. Remember the Verizon Programmer who outsourced his programming job to three Chinese individuals, gaining promotions at work while surfing cat videos?
This one really grinds my gears: "You would make a great politician, have you ever considered that?"
Oh yes, to bad I don't have a couple million to chuck around for a campaign which would be lost to another candidate with more money.
"Just create your own company, be your own boss etc"
All you have to do is read a book on "Innovation and Entrepreneurship", and voila. You are the next Steve Jobs and Mark Zuckerberg. Don't worry about the other 1/3 of the world that also has internet access. Don't worry about all the other people in San Francisco who spend money on patents for fun and most importantly the pyramid schemes of affiliate marketing which most "Self Employed Internet Entrepreneurs" fall into.
The latest housing trends make the future for the 39 hour minimum wage workweek look promising. Considering Wages are not adjusting for inflation, expect a similar salary for the duration of your 100 year mortgage.
For $2.5 Million in Vancouver enjoy this house:

As a high-school graduate, I am terrified.
