Laid off: terms of severance

Hi folks,

I just got laid off today from a large company. I'd been working here for 2 years and they have offered me 2 months' severance pay as well as continuing benefits until the end of this period.

On the terms of the severance, they require me to report any new employment, in which case they will give me a lump sum of half the original severance pay.

A friend of mine has hooked me up with a part-time opportunity which doesn't pay as much as the severance, but I think it might be better to not be idle and let my skills weaken, prevent gaps in my work history...and it could lead to a full-time opportunity which I am interested in.

1) Should I just hold off until after the severance pay is finished?

2) Instead, could I somehow get away with not reporting that I was working during this time? Or are companies able to track employment, making this too risky of a gamble? I am thinking SIN's, records of employment submitted to Service Canada, that sort of thing. I would have to pay back all of the severance if they found out I hadn't reported working so I am wondering if it is even worth the risk.

I realize that this is not ethical thinking, but my wife and I have a baby on the way and this situation has shaken us up.

Thanks for any help, much appreciated.
