Reference checks if you are fired

Hi there,
Let's say you are fired from a place and you still put that work experience in your resume as you still committed some time there. Afterwards, you manage to find a job after and the prospective employer inquires about the place, would the previous employer say bad things about your performance. I know these days your direct supervisors don't provide ref and everything goes thru HR.
