Equity research and investment banking salaries in Canada

A cousin of mine was asking me the question. As far as I know, if you have an MBA, a first year associate (with bonuses) can make around 180K if you work at the right bank. If not, may be around 100K with bonuses (Scotia comes to mind). What are the prospects in the industry without a MBA, but while writing the CFA exams? Being good at math enough? Need to be great with people? What kind of salaries are we looking at?

Is Financial Engineering a better option in terms of salary and work hours? (compared to IB and equity research) - tougher path for him to follow since it requires going back to school as his undergrad/masters is in Engineering (he doesn't want more schooling).

Thx.
