Interested in a career in editing and proofreading English, what steps can I take?

I admit that I don't have an English (or Literature) major but would like to obtain one or at least get exposure to all relevant courses that will help in my undertaking. My English isn't as good as some of yours here on RFD and I would like to improve on it further.

Over in the US, free online courses have been sprouting but most focus on business administration, coding/development, engineering and the sciences but I don't believe English courses are being offered. In all honestly, I don't need the designation but it seems that people will require some educational background when shopping for grammar instructors and proofreaders.

If my main goal is to be a real good proofreader and grammar instructor, what would be the best steps to take? I plan to learn on the side as I currently hold a full time job.

I know distance education won't be the best way to learn these skills but I don't mind participation through web conferencing if that means getting to interact with fellow classmates and professors.

Would be very interested to hear from English Majors, Masters, and PhD's and anyone else who's got something to contribute.

Thanks in advance.
